Univ.-Prof. Dr. Paola Ayala

Paola Ayala held from 2013 the Berta Karlik Professorship at the Faculty of Physics of the University of Vienna, where she continues now to lead the group Tailored Hybrid Structures.

Her research is focused on functional carbon molecular nanostructures from the fundamental point of view as well as oriented to applications in semiconductor technology as well as biological systems. Ayala joined the Faculty of Physics at University of Vienna in 2009 with the prestigious European Union IEF Marie-Curie Fellowship. She is  part of different research networks and multinational research projects. Prof. Ayala has personally been awarded grants from the the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Brazilian Research Funding Agency (CNPq), the Prometeo Research Grant from SENESCyT Ecuador. She was chosen as one of the 10 Future Leaders  in 2012 at the Science an Technology Society Forum in Kyoto.

Ayala was born in Ecuador  and she has had the honor to be the first female physicist awarded a PhD degree in her country. Prof. Ayala has represented Ecuador for several years at the Working group of Women in Physics of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics, and was recently delegated to represent Austria as team leader.

She is one of the Regional Associate Editors of the Journal Materials Express in Europe and serves the German Humboldt Foundation as Specialist Committee Member for the allocation of the Georg Foster Program Research Awards and Fellowships. Ayala´s research group has multicultural environment and it embraces a very important cooperation of the university of Vienna and Yachay Tech.
